“UBÏQ: A Mental Odyssey
One should never go unprepared in terms of armament. This goes for one’s space ship, one’s own mind and one’s own body as well. Concerning the departure itself, one knows more or less everything about it, since it was carefully prepared. But what is to be expected ahead, either flat or deep, is yet unknown. This Odyssey is neither chosen nor wanted, it’s not even inflicted. There it stands, unavoidable, like a pure evidence.
To find one’s bearings through the Galerie Maisonneuve is an attempt, an attempt to structure the odyssey, but simultaneously an attempt to distort it, melt oneself in it — in short : to recognize it.
One might get a shot in one’s arm, swallow a piece of blotting paper, have a snuff of snow, chew some grass. All these have already been tried, and one knows by heart these paths which have one day turned to marble.
It will rather partake of a memory, of a nostalgia, of an existence lived by proxy, of a road opening onto several labyrinths, of the victory of schizophrenia over reality. In short, it will partake of the contradiction which consists in describing the world as seen from inside this very world.
10 chapters or stations.
There will be 10 chapters or stations — may be more, may be less — but they will appear in succession, according to an order alien to chronology or the generally admitted notion of time.”

The Galerie Maisonneuve has removed to new premises, there to embrace a new era.
It has offered an entire year and the whole gallery space to the artist Mathieu Briand there to develop his project UBÏQ : A Mental Odyssey.
This ambitious time-space realisation was mounted for the first time at the Los Angeles REDCAT Theater and later at the Boston MIT List Visual Center where it will be on show until April.

The Galerie Maisonneuve has the pleasure to inaugurate its new premises with Mathieu Briand’s project : Ubïq : A Mental Odyssey, whose format and timing are a challenge for the mere structure of a gallery.
From January 2007 till January 2008, the gallery will unfold the ten chapters of the artist’s visual, mental and perceptive “odyssey”, a journey in time and space where reality and fiction will echo each other, either shrink, swell, or seem forever at odds with one another.
Scrutinising the interweaving of life experience and its imprint on the imagination, Mathieu Briand fathoms the quality of today’s world whose reality is confined in the naming of it alone. It is obvious that when confronted to each other, neither life nor imagination has the upper hand, but what we consider as real is the constant intertwining of both.
To this purpose, the artist has partly adopted the visual language of Stanley Kubrick’s cult film 2001: A Space Odyssey. Kubrick’s recurring associations create an idiosyncratic, aesthetic vocabulary which blends the whole. To boot, the influence of the film is here expressed in the radical reversal of time passing.
The appropriate word to describe Mathieu Briand ‘s project is definitely “manipulation”. As would a prestidigitator, Briand leads us into his private world — a world made of personal references, either self-experienced or dreamed of — and to this purpose the tricks he uses are material objects and visual events alike. These references are brought together and distanced again ; in the illusionist perspective thus created, another world emerges, with multiple entrances and no known frontiers.
When so doing, he attempts — while questioning and even dissecting a certain number of elements — to lead the viewer to find a way of its own and in order to achieve this form of training, he paves the way of the viewer with compulsory questions about his surroundings. The outcome of this seminal obligation requires necessarily the unravelling of threads, i.e. the threads of one’s own perception of the world, the threads of one’s own history.

Il faut dans le meilleur des cas toujours prévoir son armement. Que ce soit celui de son vaisseau, celui de son mental ou celui de son propre corps. On connaît un tant soit peu le départ, on le prépare. Il n’y a devant que l’espace ; qu’il soit plat ou profond, on ne le connaît pas. Cette odyssée n’est ni choisie ni voulue, ni même subie, elle est là comme une évidence.
Le trajet à la galerie Maisonneuve est une tentative. Celle de structurer l’odyssée, voire de la déformer, de se fondre en elle, bref de la reconnaître.
On pourrait s’enfoncer une aiguille dans le bras, avaler un buvard, sniffer de la neige, mâcher des plantes ; tout cela a été fait et l’on connaît par cœur les chemins qui ne sont plus de traverse mais pavés de marbre.
Ce sera plutôt de l’orde d’un souvenir, voire d’une nostalgie, d’un vécu par procuration, d’un chemin à plusieurs labyrinthes, de la victoire de la schyzophrénie sur la réalité, bref d’une contradiction, celle d’écrire ou de décrire ce monde dans le monde.

La galerie Maisonneuve s’installe dans un nouvel espace, dans un nouveau temps.
Elle a proposé à l’artiste Mathieu Briand de consacrer l’ensemble de son année et de son espace au projet UBÏQ : A Mental Odyssey.
Ce projet ambitieux a été abordé pour la première fois au REDCAT Theater de Los Angeles puis au MIT List Visual Art Center de Boston, où il se poursuit jusqu’en avril.

« odyssée » visuelle, mentale et perceptive où réel et fiction se mêlent en une constante mise en abyme, où l’espace et le temps se contractent, se dilatent et se confrontent à l’infini.
Mathieu Briand interroge, à travers l’interpénétration du vécu et de l’imaginaire, la qualité d’un monde qui n’a plus aujourd’hui de réel que le nom. Tant est évident le constat que l’un ne prédomine plus sur l’autre, mais qu’à l’inverse c’est de leur constante imbrication que naît ce que nous croyons être notre réalité.
Pour ce faire, l’artiste s’est en partie réapproprié le langage visuel de Stanley Kubrick et de son film culte 2001: A Space Odyssey, dont certaines évocations récurrentes impriment à l’ensemble un vocabulaire et un lien esthétique. L’influence de ce film s’exerce en outre sur la manière dont est ici envisagée l’insertion du projet dans une contradiction temporelle très affirmée.

À travers ce qu’il faut bien nommer une manipulation, Mathieu Briand tente de nous faire pénétrer son monde, fait de références personnelles vécues et fantasmées, par le biais d’objets physiques et d’expériences visuelles. Des références qui ainsi assemblées et remises en perspective lui permettent de faire émerger un autre monde, aux voies d’accès multiples et aux contours inexistants.
Ce faisant il tente, en questionnant, voire en disséquant, un certain nombre de composantes, d’amener le spectateur à chercher une voie qui lui soit propre, en le confrontant à l’obligation d’avancer parmi les questions relatives à ce qui constitue son entourage. Une obligation qui ne peut trouver d’issue qu’en parvenant à démêler l’écheveau de sa propre perception du monde, de sa propre histoire.

UBIQ: A Mental Odyssey(le titre empruntant à Ubïk de Philip K-Dick et 2001, Odyssey de l’espace de Stanley Kubrick) n’est pas seulement un livre d’artiste mais fait l’objet d’une expérience inédite d’écriture à 4 mains entre un artiste Mathieu Briand et un écrivain Daniel Foucard inventant un récit — où se mêlent rave party, science-fiction et bandes dessinées — présenté dans des enluminures d’anciens contes pour enfants. Dans cette proposition artistique, il est question de détournement, de jeu de rôle, de monde “parallèle” dans un va-et-vient ludique et interactif entre images et texte. Un récit diffracté où le livre devient de jeu et l’enjeu de cette expérience artistique qui va réunir les deux protagonistes de ce livre. Ce détournement du célèbre ready made de Marcel Duchamp, Air de Paris, rend paradoxalement à l’ampoule pharmaceutique sa fonction initiale de récipient à médicament. Et pourtant, comme l’indique le texte gravé à l’envers et lisible à travers la boule, ce qu’elle recèle n’est en aucun cas un sérum soignant des infections mais celui qui enflamme et excite les sens…

Cette vidéo, un « document imaginé », rassemble des extraits parvenant de diverses archives. Elle raconte la fascination des psychotropes qui est à l’origine de l’effervescence de plusieurs contre-cultures, comme la « beat génération », les hippies, le rock, la techno etc… Unifiant des images choisies arbitrairement, l’œuvre nous livre une métaphore de son principe fondateur : la recherche des outils mentaux permettant d’appréhender les liens entre des choses différentes (comme l’inframince, la supersymetrie, le LSD) et la quête de la maitrise de la conscience. L’art est une cosa mentale (chose de l’esprit) par excellence, le concept de Léonardo da Vinci réactivé par Marcel Duchamp est toujours vivant !

The Prologue of Ubïq : A Mental Odyssey features a faithful reconstitution of the artist’s studio, the place where this wide project was first conceived. A complex accumulation of elements is here displayed — an abundance of hints, prefigurative of developments to come — simultaneously throwing light on the artist’s working methods, networks, and questionings, in short: all that feeds him and provides substantiality and structure.

Elle a proposé à l’artiste Mathieu Briand de consacrer l’ensemble de son année et de son espace au projet UBÏQ : A Mental Odyssey.
Ce projet ambitieux a été abordé pour la première fois au REDCAT Theater de Los Angeles puis au MIT List Visual Art Center de Boston, où il se poursuit jusqu’en avril.

La galerie Maisonneuve est heureuse d’inaugurer son nouvel espace avec le projet de Mathieu Briand, Ubïq: A Mental Odyssey, dont le format et la durée constituent une gageure pour la structure même d’une galerie.
De janvier 2007 à janvier 2008, l’artiste déroulera à la galerie, en une dizaine de chapitres, son
« odyssée » visuelle, mentale et perceptive où réel et fiction se mêlent en une constante mise en abyme, où l’espace et le temps se contractent, se dilatent et se confrontent à l’infini.
Mathieu Briand interroge, à travers l’interpénétration du vécu et de l’imaginaire, la qualité d’un monde qui n’a plus aujourd’hui de réel que le nom. Tant est évident le constat que l’un ne prédomine plus sur l’autre, mais qu’à l’inverse c’est de leur constante imbrication que naît ce que nous croyons être notre réalité.
Pour ce faire, l’artiste s’est en partie réapproprié le langage visuel de Stanley Kubrick et de son film culte 2001: A Space Odyssey, dont certaines évocations récurrentes impriment à l’ensemble un vocabulaire et un lien esthétique. L’influence de ce film s’exerce en outre sur la manière dont est ici envisagée l’insertion du projet dans une contradiction temporelle très affirmée.

À travers ce qu’il faut bien nommer une manipulation, Mathieu Briand tente de nous faire pénétrer son monde, fait de références personnelles vécues et fantasmées, par le biais d’objets physiques et d’expériences visuelles. Des références qui ainsi assemblées et remises en perspective lui permettent de faire émerger un autre monde, aux voies d’accès multiples et aux contours inexistants.
Ce faisant il tente, en questionnant, voire en disséquant, un certain nombre de composantes, d’amener le spectateur à chercher une voie qui lui soit propre, en le confrontant à l’obligation d’avancer parmi les questions relatives à ce qui constitue son entourage. Une obligation qui ne peut trouver d’issue qu’en parvenant à démêler l’écheveau de sa propre perception du monde, de sa propre histoire.

Le Prologue de Ubïq: A Mental Odyssey propose une reconstitution fidèle de l’atelier de l’artiste où s’est élaboré ce vaste projet. S’y déploie une complexe accumulation d’indices qui laissent présager de développements futurs, tout en éclairant les réseaux, mode de travail et interrogations qui le nourrissent et lui fournissent substance et structure.

1 The story of « fools move mountains »

« Yu Gong Yi Shang » comes from an old Chinese phrase (in idiomatic usage, Yu Gong means ‘Foolish Old Man’, Yi means Move and Shan means mountain). Every day, an old man tries to move a mountain and everybody thought he was mad. But he believes that, even though he cannot move the mountain, his children, grandchildren and decent will continue doing it. Eventually, more and more people came over to help him move the mountain. Ultimately, the spirit of heaven was moved by what he had done, and this spirit decided to move the whole mountain. This story is about human will, and about collective power.

In modern China, the phrase became a metaphor for man’s ability to overcome nature. In this sense, the great leap forward, and the urbanization of China became the ultimate ‘realisation’ of this metaphor.

What we would like to do in this project is to rethink and debate this Maoist slogan, and the ancient idiom from which it derives, in the present context.

2 Objective

This is a site-specific (Nanling) art project which is provoking a response to the physical space within the context of immigrant community, history, architecture, economic developing, urbanization and nature landscape. Artist uses these contexts to make site- specific artwork in Ruyang which is on the border between Guangdong province and Hunan province in south of China.

3 Background of the site

3.1 Location

Nanling

Nanling (Southern Mountain) area (around 300 square kilometers) is located on the border between Guangdong Province and Hunan province. It also marks the periphery of Lingnan culture (the culture in Guangdong province). In this area, there is one of the biggest and best-preserved primal forests in Guangdong. Fifty years ago, there was almost nobody there. In this region today, apart from the beautiful landscape, there are very rich layers of culture, including the history and culture of immigrant communities since 1949; economic development of the area since 1949; and architectural development, that provide a range of materials and possibilities for artistic practice.

The Nanling area has never separated itself from the rapidly-developing urbanization of Southern China but engaged with it directly, and so – alongside the natural landscape – this area reflects Chinese development in all its various aspects, since 1949（immigrants started the forest industry in 1949, after 80′s the economic goes to marketing direction and the capital from private company goes to this area to develop tourist industry since last year）, Ruyang is thus a place in which, and with which, contemporary art can make dialogue.

3.2 Contexts

The following aspects of Nanling will comprise the context for the artists:

A multi-layered dialogue:

1 with the natural landscape;
2 with the community;
3 with history;
4 travel between Guangzhou and Ruyang, and the dialogue with the extended urbanization of the Pearl River Delta area;
5 tourist industry, mainly focuse on the people from Pearl River Delta area.

4 Realisation of the Project

The realisation of the project will take the form of a series of residencies. Four French artists will be invited, one after the other, to research between Guangzhou and Nanling, and ultimately to realise a site-specific work in the Ruyang area. Each artist will stay from 6 till 8 weeks in Guangdong province within the duration of the project.

There are two studios available; one is in Guangzhou and the other one is in Nanling.

Inside a cylinder, 76 cameras are installed in an ellipse. In the centre is a trampoline on which one person can jump.
The cameras all point to the centre of the room. It is a common vanishing point. They are all synchronised.
The space is going to be  » photographed  » from all angles at a common T time. T=76 cameras.
The images will then be scanned and assembled by a specially designed electronic module, in the order from 1 to 76. Next, the images will be placed end to end and will be reproduced by the module on screens, one after the other, hence creating a movement within a limited time space. T=76=1+2+3.
Our brain’s capacity to receive a fluid televised movement is around 25 images per second (25/s). By dividing T= 76 images by 25 we obtain T= 3,04 seconds = t. We can consider it as the reference time for our installation.
Gently introduce a new time of 12/s, in other words T=6 seconds = t’ and form a cycle, transferring the reference time to the new time and the new time to the reference time, with an increasing and decreasing movement…gently.
A new T is created, one that is entirely variable and changes from t to t’.
Tx=t*x+t*x’ (x being the number of successive sequences).
T is a cycle divided into sequences of t and t’ that follow on from one another. Each t or t’ is unique even if they follow on from one another. T is always new, like our time, where each second that passes is a unique second. Each T moment is a moment in time, a synthesis of three times: what has been lived, one’s personal viewpoint and what is possible.
A time based on different rhythms of vision. The beginning of the sequence is emitted in 25/s, in other words in 3
seconds. Then there is a new capture and another broadcast in 25/s five times. Then a new capture and a broadcast in 12/s. This occurs four times over, then a new capture and a broadcast in 12/s two times over…until time is reversed in the sequence.
And finally a new capture, the broadcasting of which takes place in a loop five times on the trot.
The adding together of images with a common viewpoint creates a movement that can confuse our mind. We think that it is a camera that is turning since we have to move in order to look at an object from every angle. In this situation we are everywhere and the object is able to move.

L’espace va être  » photographié  » sous tous ses angles à un temps commun T. T=76 caméras.
Ces images vont être ensuite scannées et assemblées par un module électronique spécialement conçu et cela dans l’ordre, de 1 à 76. Puis, les images mises bout à bout, vont être restituées par le module sur des écrans, les uns après les autres, créant ainsi un mouvement en un temps réduit .
T=76=1+2+3.
La capacité de notre cerveau à recevoir un mouvement fluide télévisuel est d’environ 25 images par seconde (25/s). En divisant T= 76 images par 25 on obtient T= 3,04 secondes = t, on peut le considérer comme le temps de référence de notre installation. Introduire délicatement un nouveau temps qui serait de 12/s soit T=6 secondes = t’. Et faire un cycle, transvasant le temps de référence au nouveau temps et le temps nouveau au référent, de façon croissante et décroissante… Délicatement.
Alors se crée un nouveau T entièrement variable, passant de t à t’. Tx=t*x+t*x’ (x étant le nombre de séquences successives). T est un cycle divisé en séquences de t et t’ qui s’enchaînent. Chaque t ou t’ est unique même si ils sesuccèdent. T est toujours nouveau, comme notre temps où chaque seconde passée est une seconde unique, chaque instant T est un instant de l’espace, une synthèse de trois temps celui du vécu, du regard personnel et d’un possible.
Un temps basé sur des rythmes de vision différents. Le début de la séquence est une diffusion en 25/s donc de 3 secondes. Puis il y a une nouvelle capture et encore diffusion en 25/s ainsi 5 fois. Puis une nouvelle capture et diffusion en 12/s. Puis une nouvelle capture et diffusion en 25/s et cela 4 fois, puis une nouvelle capture et diffusion en 12/s et cela 2 fois… jusqu’à inversion du temps dans la séquence. Et enfin une nouvelle capture dont la diffusion est faite en boucle 5 fois d’affilées.
L’addition d’images ayant un point de vue commun crée un mouvement qui peut tromper notre esprit. On pense que c’est une caméra qui tourne car nous devons nous déplacer pour regarder un objet sous tous ses angles. Nous sommes partout et l’objet peut se déplacer.

En utilisant ce système, nous sommes certain d’un déplacement des gens dans l’espace pour une expérience constamment renouvelée.

1.Aménagement de l’espace
Il y a des caméras placées dans tout le musée, ainsi que des connecteurs muraux dit plug-in.
L’ensemble est relié par des câbles à un boîtier de contrôle.
Certains plug-in sont munis d’un crochet pour y suspendre un casque, ce sont des plug-in aménagés .

2.Les casques
Chaque casque est muni d’une caméra avec micro reliée à des lunettes vidéo et des écouteurs.
Du casque part ensuite un câble avec au bout un connecteur (plug).
Il peut y avoir un nombre de casques illimités.
Ils sont dispersés dans le musée
En effet ils se rechargent sur tous les plug-in muraux, ils peuvent donc être pris et laissés sur des plug-in aménagés que l’on aura choisit dans l’espace du musée.

3.Le boîtier de commande
Ce boîtier régit des connexions pré-établies.
Quand on se plug avec son casque à un mur, on peut voir, soit par la caméra d’un autre casque qui est alors connectée en même temps, soit par une des caméras placées dans le musée, cela étant régi par des combinaisons.
Chaque plug-in mural a donc une multitude de possibilités de connexions qui dépendent les unes des autre, ainsi ce que l’on croit vrai à un moment peut être faux à un autre et vis versa.
Le mode de perception est en perpétuelle évolution.
Il amène les spectateurs à être actifs et à la recherche de nouvelles connexions, et plus ils sont actifs plus les combinaisons sont nombreuses et différentes.
Il y a alors une volonté du groupe de s’organiser pour avoir le maximum de combinaisons possibles.
Ex : si A se connecte en B, A voit B : A->B = B
si A se connecte en B et C se connecte aussi en B alors A voit C : A->B<-C = C
En plus de programmes de connexions préétablit, il y aura la possibilité d’utiliser ce système comme un outil, on pourra décider de certaines combinaisons grâce à un rack de connexions type bataille navale.
Le futur de l’œuvre comme rhizome et outil.
Nous devons envisager les connexions à l’intérieur du musée mais aussi à l’extérieur.
Le réseau doit s’étendre à d’autres lieux qui seront aussi munis de casques et d’un aménagement .
Ainsi plusieurs lieux pourront être connectés et échanger.
L’œuvre reste ainsi en mouvement et en développement constant.
Nous devons envisager l’œuvre comme un rhizome en perpétuel développement dont le nœud central et nourricier serait le nouveau musée du 21 siècle de Kanasawa.

Audio-Visual Exchange Device for the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa

Kanazawa is a small city in Japan, approximately 500 km away from Tokyo. A new contemporary art museum will open in October 2004. The building designed by SANAA (Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa) is an entirely glass-walled cylinder, in which variously proportioned rectangular exhibition rooms and light courts (light-filled courtyards) are randomly positioned. The museum commissioned Mathieu Briand to create an artwork whereby multiple audiences can exchange their audio-visual senses. Sixteen compact cameras and fourteen jacks are installed around the building. The audience members wear a helmet that incorporates a camera, goggle-style compact monitor and headphones. The audience members may also carry a connector that can be plugged into and unplugged from the jacks placed around the museum, in order to exchange audiovisual experiences with others.
When a connector is not plugged into a jack, one sees the environment through his/her own camera. In other words, one walks around seeing the surrounding environment through his goggle monitor. When the connector is plugged into a jack on the wall, the person sees the view taken by one of the cameras installed in the building, or taken by another camera worn by another audience member whose camera is also connected to a jack. By plugging into different jacks, one would see different views taken by different cameras. Even when one keeps the connector plugged into the same jack, the view unexpectedly switches when others unplug and/or plug. Views do not randomly switch. They have certain combinations of patterns. The audience will exchange what they see with others and influence what others see through the connections.
The cameras installed on the ceilings and very high places on the walls are paired with other cameras, which show similar views. For example, the sizes of Exhibition Gallery 1 and 3 are both six square meters and the entrances are in the center of one wall. In those two galleries, a camera is installed at the upper center of the opposite wall from the entrance. The two cameras directed at the entrances display almost identical views. These visuals are both related: when the view of the Gallery 1 camera switches into the one of the Gallery 3, the room looks the same but the people and exhibited works are different. The same effect is intended with the cameras installed in the hallways. A camera installed on the ceiling of a hallway shows a “light court” at the end of the long hallway. There is another camera placed next to this camera facing 90 degrees away showing another hallway and another light court. The two distances between the camera and the light court are equal, therefore the images taken by the cameras look similar. One sees himself with the helmet, and suddenly, he loses sight of himself. Carefully looking, he finds out that it is a totally different hallway. The positioning of cameras and the related patterns precisely present the various features of the building, which, at the same time, appears to be homogenous.
The circuits connecting the cameras have a potential of opening the system to outside of the museum through the Internet. When a similar project is realized in another museum in the future, we can exchange audio-visuals beyond the framework of one museum.
The helmet was designed by Kunio Okawara. Okawara had previously designed the mechanicals for Gundam, a famous animation series almost every Japanese is familiar with. This idea came along when we were having a meeting about the helmet design. Mathieu referred to Gundam, trying to describe the subtle shape, and this led to the collaboration with Kunio Okawara. Mathieu had an idea that this device to connect the real world to the fictitious world should have a design that looks like something that has jumped out of an animation. Kunio Okawara gave shape to this idea.

There are 9 temporary accommodation units, all exactly identical. In construction and appearance their design is a reminiscence of wartime military bunkers. They are located at 9 sites across the world.
They are all linked by virtual and analogue connections. Virtual links: encrypted network systems linking all units (very high speed Internet, Extranet and Intranet network, satellite, local radio loop, etc). Physical links: carrier pigeons.
The 9 temporary accommodation units and connections form a network. The network can be used as a temporary measure, no-one can remain in the same accommodation unit for more than… (to be specified). To use the network a request must be sent to bunker@organe.org. If the request is accepted, you will receive an electronic ring which will give you the location of the bunker and tell you how to get there.
Once on site your ring will serve as a key.
This is a network. A network with regular stops. So we could call it a stops network. All the stops are identical and physically incarnated. There are 9 of them. 9 identical habitable modules. Because each unit is identical and because the image of the bunker is a common “place”, visitors can immediately find their way around. We move between points that are all identical but whose geographical location has changed. There is a thin line between the inside, a familiar territory and the outside which remains to be explored. The network becomes a tool which may, by ordinary usance, oblige users to go in the territory outside. It i s no longer data that is transported through a network, but ourselves, a kind of teletransportation made possible by a combining of physical and virtual elements.

Il y a 9 unités d’habitation temporaire, toutes strictement identiques. Leur architecture rappelle esthétiquement et techniquement celle des ouvrages de guerre appelés bunkers. Elles sont situées géographiquement sur plusieurs endroits du globe. Elles sont toutes reliées par des liens virtuels et analogiques.
Les liens virtuels : systèmes réseaux cryptés reliant les différentes unités entre elles (Internet, Extranet, Intranet en réseau très haut débit, satellite, boucle locale radio…).
Les liens organiques : pigeons voyageurs.
Les 9 unités d’habitation temporaires constituent avec les liens un réseau. Le réseau peut être utilisé de façon temporaire, on ne peut pas rester plus de… (à définir) dans la même unité d’habitation. Pour utiliser le réseau, il faut adresser une demande à bunker@organe.org. Si la demande est acceptée, vous recevrez une bague électronique qui va vous donner la position du bunker et sa route d’accès.
Une fois sur place votre bague vous servira de clef.
Il s’agit d’un réseau. Un réseau rythmé par des stops. On pourrait appeler cela un réseau de stoppages. Les stops sont tous identiques et incarnés physiquement. Ils sont 9. Neuf modules habitables identiques. Leur parfaite similitude permet l’appropriation immédiate de l’habitat par sa répétition et aussi par le fait que l’image du bunker est un “lieu” commun. Nous nous déplaçons entre des points qui sont tous identiques mais dont la position géographique a changé. Il y a un infra mince entre l’intérieur qui est de l’ordre du connu et l’extérieur qui reste un espace à explorer. Le réseau prend son sens d’outil qui peut par son simple usage amener les utilisateurs sur un extérieur obligatoire. Il ne s’agit plus de transporter des données mais bien nous-mêmes à travers un réseau, sorte de téléportation rendue possible par l’association de plusieurs éléments tant organiques que virtuels.

][SYS*11. Mie>AbE/SoS\ ][SYS*10][][

This is not a title but a classification code. It is part of a unit composed of other SYS. The aim is not to replicate (mime) a gesture but simply to note its existence among the others. The gestures are autonomous but coordinated. Together they form a movement. It is a question of impermeable systems placed before bodies.

Stage 1: [SYS*10. MeE/SoS\BoS]

Starting points: the sound, the loop and the vinyl record. There is a matrix composed of four vinyl records on which sounds from machines and samples have been etched in a loop. Four Tecnics Mk2 1200 sl players are installed with a mixing table so that the public can arrange the sounds from the four records at the same time. The sounds can continue to play endlessly over and over again since they are part of a loop. The system is autonomous since it can continue to operate without any outside intervention. A « pitch » on the turntable makes it possible to modify the rotation speed of the records. The sound from the four records is composed through a play on time and speed in a chaotic process. Hence the public will be part of an attempt to organise a system that operates continuously.

Stage 2: [SYS*11. Mie>AbE/SoS\ ][SYS*10. MeE/SoS\BoS][]

Utilisation of a vinyl record etching machine. It is used for test pressing (individual records that have a lifetime of 30 plays on average). Once the sound has been composed, the « DJ-public » can etch the sound on a blank vinyl record. Unlike the initial matrixes that are made up of sounds in a loop, the new etched records are made up of spiral sound, in other words a sound with a beginning and an end. They can no longer go on playing continuously and have to repeatedly be put back to the beginning. If left to its own devices, the system comes to a standstill. Its autonomy goes hand in hand with human intervention and therefore implies the necessity of a continuous performance. Its lifetime merely serves to accentuate this necessity. We switch from separate sounds to a “piece” that exists physically and is instantly available. This new sound arrangement or piece that is etched on a vinyl record serves in turn as a matrix. Hence, arrangement and production are necessary in order for the sound to last. An accumulation of successive layers leads in turn to a new sound. It is a sample of a sample pushed to extreme limits, using the analogue archaic side of vinyl records. It is mechanical sound, a machine sample. Man is a vital tool for this mirror structure and the etching machine changes from a tool into an instrument. Sounds in a loop, infinite>mix>production>spiral sound, finished>remix…

As the brackets indicate, there is a closed system that tends to mirror the sound and transform the tool into a instrument of which Man is a part. Free access to the mixing table means that those who want to can come and etch the compositions that they have put together outside the site and take them away with them. The etching machine once again becomes a simple tool and man an instrument.

Ceci n'est pas un titre mais un code de classification. Il s'intègre à un ensemble composé d'autres SYS. Il ne s'agit pas d'imager un geste mais juste de noter son existence parmi les autres. Les gestes sont autonomes, mais coordonnés ensemble ils forment un mouvement. Il est question de systèmes hermétiques mis en présence de corps.

Etape 1: [SYS*10. MeE/SoS\BoS]

Bases de départ : le son, la boucle, le disque vinyl. Il y a une matrice composée de 4 disques vinyls sur lesquels ont été gravés des sons en boucle, provenant de machines et de samples. Quatre platines Technics Mk2 1200 sl sont installées avec une console de mixage pour que le public puisse agencer les sons des quatre vinyls en même temps. Les sons peuvent continuer de tourner sur eux-mêmes à l’infini puisqu’il s’agit de boucles. Le système est autonome car il peut continuer de fonctionner sans action extérieure. Un « pitch » sur la platine permet de modifier la vitesse de rotation des disques vinyls. La composition des sons entre eux va se faire par l’action du temps et de la vitesse, dans un processus chaotique. Le public sera alors dans une tentative d’organisation d’un système en marche continue.

Utilisation d’une machine à graver des disques Vinyl. Elle permet de faire des tests pressing (disque unique) d’une durée de vie de 30 utilisations, en moyenne. Une fois l’agencement sonore réalisé, le public-dj, peut graver ce son sur un disque vinyl vierge. A la différence des matrices de départ qui sont composées de sons en boucle, les nouveaux disques gravés le sont en spirale, c’est à dire qu’il y a un début et une fin. Ils ne peuvent plus tourner sur eux-mêmes en continu, il faut sans cesse les remettre. S’ils sont abandonnés à eux-mêmes, le système s’arrête, son autonomie va de paire avec une action humaine, il sous-entend alors une performance en continu. Et sa durée de vie, ne fait qu’accentuer cette obligation. On est donc passé de sons séparés à un « morceau », existant physiquement et immédiatement utilisable. Ce nouvel agencement sonore ou morceau gravé sur un disque vinyl sert à son tour de matrice. Il y a donc obligation d’agencement et de production pour que le son perdure. Il y aura une accumulation de couches qui immanquablement vont amener à un nouveau son. C’est du sample de samples à l’extrême, avec le côté analogique et archaïque du vinyl, c’est du son mécanique, du sample machine. L’homme est un outil indispensable à cette mise en abime et la machine à graver passe du statut d’outil à celui d’instrument. Comme les crochets l'indiquent, il y a un système fermé qui tend à mettre le son en abîme et à transformer l'outil en instrument et dont l'homme est un rouage (mythe de Sysiphe) et un autre ouvert. Il y aura sur la console de mixage une entrée libre qui permettra à ceux qui le désire de venir graver les compositions qu'ils auront fait à l'extérieur du lieu et bien entendu de repartir avec. La machine à graver redevient un pure outil et l'homme un instrument.
